Easy DIY Appliance Maintenance: A Preventive Guide

DIY appliance maintenance includes the things homeowners can do themselves without contacting an appliance repair company.

DIY Maintenance:

Dryer

  • Clear lint trap after every load
  • Get vent cleaned annually to avoid fires

Dishwasher

  • Rinse food off dishes before putting inside to avoid overloading filter
  • Clean filter weekly to ensure clean dishes & avoid clogging drain line & eventually the pump

Washer

  • Mix baking soda with vinegar and wipe inside of tub and gaskets a few times a year. This cleans, deodorizes & kills bacteria
  • Wipe inside gaskets to remove debris and avoid mold, monthly
  • Clean soap dispenser with a wet cloth monthly
  • Less is more when pertaining to detergent
  • Don’t overload the tub when washing

Ice Maker

  • Change filter every 6 months
  • Wipe dispenser on the door gently to avoid mold
  • Don’t let ice sit for extended periods (use or dump)

Refrigerator

  • Vacuum coils underneath every few months (more frequently if you have pets as the fur accumulates)
  • Avoid putting too much weight on the door as it can strain the hinges. This also causes damage to the rubber gasket which can lead to temperature problems and will require your appliance to work overtime to keep it cold.
  • Don't overload with food causing airflow blockage, uneven temperature, longer compressor running time and increased refrigerator energy consumption.

Oven

  • Use self-clean feature as infrequent as possible as to avoid overheating electronics and not being able to unlock after cleaning cycle completes

Window and Wall Air Conditioners

  • Clean filters(if able to remove) every 2-3 weeks
  • Remove them and store away if possible once the warm weather passes
